How do I know whether my windshield needs a repair or replacement?

Hey folks! This is Jake from Magnatech Auto Glass.
Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.
Today's question is:
"How do I know whether my windshield needs a repair or replacement?"
Answer:
The general rule of thumb we use is: if the chip fits under the size of a quarter, we can generally repair it. If the break point isn’t too big, we can absolutely repair it. Once the damage is usually larger than that, it tends to be not repairable. At that point it’s more of a structural issue and would need a replacement.
So the quick way to think about it is size and structure. Smaller chips that stay within that “quarter-size” range are often candidates for repair. Once the damage grows beyond that or the break point is too large, the windshield is compromised in a way that makes repair unreliable. That’s when replacement becomes the safer, more appropriate option. If you’re not sure where yours falls, we can look at it and tell you straight—because the goal is to keep the glass safe and stable, not gamble on a repair that won’t hold.
Summary:
As a rule of thumb, chips smaller than a quarter are usually repairable, assuming the break point is not too large. Larger damage often becomes structural and typically requires windshield replacement.
