Jake describes the sourcing process for feature-laden modern windshields. It begins with a VIN decoder, which produces a NAGS part number the team looks up in their system. From there they check the specific equipment, such as a lane departure warning system, or a heads-up display, which requires dedicated HUD glass or the view will be blurry. Other variables include color and whether the windshield has a rain sensor. If the vehicle needs recalibration, they bring all the necessary equipment to the appointment. Jake emphasizes that vehicles from roughly 2015 onward carry many options, with some models offering eight or nine different glass variants, so accurate decoding and exact matching are essential rather than guesswork.
The first thing we have to do to get close to figuring out what part they actually have is use a VIN decoder. Once that decoder pops out a NAGS number, we bring it up in our system and look at it. If it says the vehicle is equipped with a lane departure warning system, or if it says HUD, which is heads-up display, you can only use HUD glass for that, or it's going to be blurry. There are all these little things we have to check. We also make sure that if it needs recalibration, we bring all the recalibration equipment with us. Most of the smaller differences come down to color and whether it has a rain sensor or not. But pretty much everything from about 2015 and up has fancy options now; some makes and models have eight or nine different glass options for the same car. So you can't just guess; you have to decode it and match every option exactly.
