Hey folks! This is Jake from Magnatech Auto Glass.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"If I keep poking the rock chip with my fingernail, will it get worse?"

Answer:

Based on my experience—yes, sometimes. I’ve done it before, I’ve had trainees do it. Sometimes if you poke the chip, it will crack out. Sometimes even doing a chip repair—if you add too much pressure—you can crack it out. And sometimes you can take your fist and pound it into the chip and nothing will happen.

It really depends on how bad that damage is, and nobody can really know just by looking at it. Glass is volatile. I’ve had the tiniest rock chip spread right across during a repair, and I’ve had a big half-dollar size repair fill in immediately and it was structurally perfect. So it really just depends on the break point. The safest move is to stop messing with it and get it assessed or repaired, because pressure on a damaged spot can be the thing that makes it run.

Summary:

Poking a rock chip can sometimes cause it to crack further, but outcomes are unpredictable because glass damage is volatile. Even small chips can spread under pressure, so Magnatech advises avoiding tampering and getting the chip evaluated and repaired promptly.
