Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.
Today's question is:
A windshield glass is laminated, so it’s made out of two layers. That myth that it’s going to leak from the crack—none of that. It’s not going to fog up because of the crack. Generally in the winter, your windshield is going to fog up more than normal just because of the temperature difference from the inside of the car to the outside.
You should never have a leak or anything like that—foggy issues—just from a chip repair or a crack. It generally just doesn’t happen. The fogging people notice tends to be seasonal and environmental, not because the glass is “letting moisture in through the crack.” Most chips don’t even penetrate through both layers. So if someone is blaming fogging on the crack itself, that’s usually misunderstanding what laminated glass is and how fogging typically happens in colder weather.
Magnatech explains that cracks and chips in laminated windshields generally do not cause leaks or increased fogging. Fogging is usually due to winter temperature differences between the warm cabin and cold outside air, not moisture entering through the glass damage.
