Building on his earlier explanation, Jake illustrates the static-versus-dynamic distinction with concrete examples. A Toyota Camry, as a foreign car, takes a static recalibration: it needs a target board, a single board or a three-shot setup for Toyota, along with a laser-aligned stand. A Jeep Wrangler, a domestic vehicle, takes a dynamic recalibration, which means plugging into the ECU and driving the car until the system completes. He notes dynamic jobs are usually quick, around five to ten minutes when everything is installed correctly, after which the customer is brought back and checked out. In short, foreign cars rely on target boards and laser alignment, while domestic cars are recalibrated by driving.
Take a Toyota Camry; it's a foreign car, and foreign cars are static recalibrations. That would require a target board, a certain single target board or a three-shot for Toyota, plus the stand being laser-aligned. So with a static one, the car stays put and we set up the boards and shoot the camera right there. Now take a Jeep Wrangler, for example; that's a domestic car, so that's a dynamic. That one requires us to plug into the ECU and then go drive it; the system has to relearn while the car's moving. They're generally pretty quick; as long as everything's installed properly, it's about five to ten minutes, it'll recalibrate, and then we bring it back to the customer and cash them out. That's basically most of the difference: your foreign cars get the static setup with the target boards and the laser alignment in place, and your domestic cars get plugged in and driven around until the system recalibrates itself.
