Hey folks! This is Jake from Magnatech Auto Glass.

Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.

Today's question is:

"When you replace a side or door window, how do you match the tint so it doesn't stand out?"

Summary:

Jake clarifies that auto glass tint comes down to essentially two factory colors. Most door glass is a standard green tint that appears clear, though some manufacturers add a slight bronze cast; front windows are generally green. Privacy glass, common on SUVs and vans, is tinted throughout the glass itself rather than being a film applied to the surface. Because vehicles like Transit and Express vans offer both tinted and non-tinted back glass, Magnatech confirms the correct option before arriving. Jake's practical method is to ask the customer to examine the broken shards over the phone and report whether they look black or green, since true green glass is unmistakably green when shattered, that quick check tells the team which replacement piece to bring.

Answer:

In the glass world there are really only two colors. You're either going to have a standard green-tinted door glass, which looks clear to us, but it's technically tinted green, or, with some manufacturers, a slight bronze tint off of it, but generally your fronts are mostly green. Now in some SUVs you can have privacy glass, where it looks tinted. That's actually tinted throughout the whole glass; it's not a film on the vehicle. So when we show up, some vehicles give you a choice of tinted or non-tinted, especially on vans; a Transit van or an Express van back glass comes in either no tint or tint. So we have to ask the customer on the phone, “Hey, you're calling about your Express van back window, does it look black, or does it look green?” We'll ask them to look at the little shards. When glass breaks up like that, the green glass is really green, so you can tell the difference, and that helps us determine exactly which one you need.
