Hey folks! This is Jake from Magnatech Auto Glass.
Welcome to another Q&A session where I answer questions from y'all on the internet.
Today's question is:
"Why does my windshield look distorted or wavy?"
Answer:
Different vehicles have different curvatures to the glass, and all of it is going to be different. You can’t compare one car to another because the shape of that glass is completely different. There are some similar cars out there that share the same body style, but as a general rule of thumb, I would treat them all differently.
There are cars out there that have a real strong curvature to the windshield, and you’re going to have an optical distortion toward the dash on that compared to a windshield that’s completely flat. It really depends on the year, make, and model—each has its own little things. When you get your windshield replaced, if you had an optical illusion that was like a defect in the glass, those are very few and far between. But if you’re looking through OEM glass and seeing a big distortion, that can absolutely be curvature to the glass.
Summary:
Distortions or “waves” can be normal and are often caused by the windshield’s curvature, which varies by vehicle make, model, and year. True defects exist but are rare; many optical effects are simply how strongly curved glass looks toward certain viewing angles.
